Mating Habits of Stupid Ducks

One of my crystal clear memories growing up was at around the age of eight when I was walking in the park with my family including some visiting relatives and I saw two ducks playing in the water. I yelled out, “Look at that. One of them is drowning the other one.” My dad grabbed my arm rather roughly and whispered, “They’re having sex.” He walked off embarrassed while I was trying to figure out how that was sex?

I’m not sure how a kid is supposed to know that violent looking behavior amongst animals is just sex. Cats yowling and hissing, ducks getting on top of each other, dogs growling–mating is such a beautiful, God-given gift.
